Emilio era il clown del circo
Che girava tutta l’italia
E portava la allegria alla gente
Che aveva dimentichato come sorridere

Emilio war der Clown eines Zirkus
Der durch Italien fuhr
Und den Menschen Freude brachte
Die das Lachen vergessen hatten

Emilio was the clown of a circus
Who travelled around Italy
To bring back happiness to the people
Who had forgotten to laugh

Poi s’innamoro della figlia del direttore di questo circo
E lei era sempre li cuando lui presentava i suoi pezzi di arte

Er verliebte sich in die Tochter des Zirkusdirektors
Und sie war immer da wenn er seine Kunststücke zeigte

He fell in love with the daughter of the director of the circus
And she always used to be there when he showed his peaces of art

Lei era una bella ballerina che piaceva a tutti
Per i suoi ochi azzurri
Per i suoi capelli biondi
Ed anche perche era giovane

Sie war eine hübsche Tänzerin
Die allen gefiel
Wegen ihren blauen Augen
Wegen ihrem blonden Haar
Und auch weil sie jung war

She was a beautiful dancer
Who everybody liked
Because of her blue eyes
Because of her blond hair
And also because she was young

Emilio le diceva che l’amava
Ma lei rispondeva di non poterlo ammare
Amare senza maschera

Emilio sagte ihr, daß er sie liebte
Doch sie antwortete, dass sie ihn nicht lieben konnte
- ohne seine Maske

Emilio told her that he loved her
But she answered that she could not love him
- without his mask on

Da quell giorno divenne triste
En non pote‘ piu far ridere la gente
Perche appena entravo nell`‘ arena
Doveva piangere

Von jenem Tag an war er traurig
Und konnte die Menschen nicht mehr zum Lachen bringen
Da er sobald er die Arena betrat
Zu Weinen begann

From that day on he was depressed
And he could not make people laugh anymore
Because each time he entered the circus
He started to cry

Ed anche tutti gli elefanti del‘ circo piangevano
Cuando lo vedevano
Perche non era pio Emilio
E non era piu amicho  di nessuno

Auch alle Elefanten des Zirkus weinten
Als sie ihn sahen
Denn er war nicht mehr Emilio
Und er war Niemandes Freundes mehr

And all the elefants of the circus  started to cry
When they saw him
Because he was not Emilio no more
And he was nobodys friend anymore

Duranti gli anni della guerra
Scomparivo anche questo circo
Ed il direttore diventava un generale
Dei    fascisti

Während der Jahre des Krieges
Verschwand auch dieser Zirkus
Und der Direktor wurde General
Bei den Faschisten

During the time of  the war
Allso this circus disappeared
And the director became a General
For the fashists

Non parlavo piu con nessuno
E lo riinchiusero
In un manimcomio

Und Emilio dem die Schlachten nicht gefielen
Sprach mit Niemandem mehr
Und so wurde er in ein Irrenhaus eingesperrt

And Emilio who did not like the battlefields
Refused to speak to anybody
And they put him into psychiatry

Passata la guerra lo rilasciarono
Ma lui non sapeva piu parlare
E come vivere
In un mondo senza dei pazzi

Als der Krieg vorbei war ließen sie ihn wieder frei
Aber er wusste nicht mehr wie man spricht und
Wie man in einer Welt ohne Verrückte lebt

After the war they let him out
But he had forgotten how to speak and how to live
In a world without lunatics/madman

Ricomincio a fare il clown
Nelle strade di roma
Dove incontro di nuovo l’amore
Che per pochi soldi  si poteva comprare

Er begann wieder als Clown in den Straßen Roms zu arbeiten
Wo er auch wieder die Liebe fand
Die man sich für wenig Geld kaufen konnte

He restarted to work  as a clown in the streets of Rome
Where he allso found love again
That one could buy for little money

La piu grande sorpresa nella sua vita lo colse
Mentre cercavo l’amore nelle strade
Una sera incontro‘ la figlia del direttore del circo

Die größte Überraschung seines Lebens widerfuhr ihm
Als er eines Nachts auf der Suche nach der Liebe
In den Straßen Roms
Die Tochter des Zirkusdirektors fand

The greatest surprise in his life occured to him
When he once looking for love in the streets of  Rome found
The daughter of the Director of his circus

Comprarono dell’heroina ed andaronno in una stanza
Di un albergho ad‘ ore  dove va tutta la gente
Per fare l’amore

Sie kauften Heroin und gingen in eines jener Stundenhotels
Wo alle Leute hingehen um Liebe zu machen

They baught some heroin and went to one of those hotels per hour
Where all people go to make love

Due giorni dopo nell‘ giornale della citta‘
Si leggeva della morte di due poveri inamorati
Soto la foto di un clown ed una ballerina dell‘ circo

Zwei Tage später las man in der Stadtzeitung
Vom Tod zweier unglücklicher Verliebter
Unter einem Foto eines Clowns und einer Zirkustänzerin

Two days later there was a notice in the city news paper
About a tragedy of two unlucky lovers
With a fotgraph of a clown and a circus-dancer

Si erano suicidati
Anchora una volta protagonisti  - sotto le luci - di questo grande circo

Sie hatten sich umgebracht
-einmal noch Darsteller - in Rampen licht dieses  großen Zirkus

They had committed suicide
- for being on more time actors - under the lights of this big, big circus
